All plants grown in the high wind prairie, Midwest, in macro-climate zone 5(ish). Average dewpoint in summer is around 60. Soil is a loamy clay. Although my preference is organic, I have used commercial fertilizers from time to time. Gardening personality relaxed and experimental, purist about very little.
Growing Days approximately 135
I like to think about what might be possible, and just give it a go ~Craig LeHoullier 2022
Plant out date: May 12th. Staking System: Hybrid single stake/florida weave. Planted with: a T of eggshells for soil conditioning and a teaspoon or so of a mix of Plant Tone/Myco/Bloodmeal/Potassium. Per a soil test indicated deficiency of Potassium, Zinc and Boron, additional will be added through the season as needed. Mulch is dried maple leaves from last fall, then grass clipping added throughout the season. Spacing: 8″ to 1 ft between plants, 2 ft between the two rows. Pruning: the lower foot of branches and any leaves that may touch the ground, any DDD (diseased, dead, damaged). Throughout the season will prune as needed if air flow needed, may prune to single stem on plants that may provide the 2 pound fruit. May top plants as well, dependent on plants ability to withstand windy environment. Stay tuned on that. Updates will be provided at each milestone: first flower, first fruit-set, first harvest, special notes, notable DDD and harvest traits. Goals: Flavor, not production. Testing the limits of spacing.
Updates will also be provided on youtube.
