Chores To Be Done in the Zone 4/5 Garden in Early May

A record for me, mostly. Updated for 2023.

  1. Beg, pray and plead to all the gods that the Drippin’ Honey Pear Tree and Sweet Bay Magnolia are actually healthy and alive. UPDATE MAY 2: Both are currently alive yet the Sweet Bay Magnolia was chewed to a nub. Purchased a replacement from the Arbor Day Foundation. UPDATE MAY 4: I see a new branch emerging from the pear tree!
  2. Complete what wasn’t completed on the previous list for later April. Damn winds and cold.
    -Continue Weeding, Spray persistent weeds
    -Plant Potato – DONE
    -Handle Strawberries DONE
    -Fertilize roses, fruit trees – DONE
    -Sprinkle Potassium in all garden areas except Main – DONE
    -Tune up Mower
    -Switch out garden bench
    -Continue processing branches and sticks -ONGOING
  3. Ensure completed pruning, mulching and fertilizing of:
    -all Tulips – DONE
    -all Hollyhock – DONE
    -all lilac – DONE
    -all roses – DONE
    -raspberries – DONE
    -all pine/juniper – DONE
    -strawberries – DONE
    -all iris – DONE
    -hydrangea -DONE
    -grapes – DONE
    -peas –
    -purple smoke tree – DONE
  4. Mow
  5. Get out the woodchipper and get to chippin’ wood. Move branches that are too big to chip.
  6. Create perch for raptor birds.
  7. Spray boulevard to remove plowing refuse. – CONTINUING
  8. Rake mulch under fruits trees to expose any pupae.
  9. Plant flowers into front garden. – DONE
  10. Spray neem on fruit trees right after petal drop, check timing for other sprays. Between 250-350 Degree Days for codling moth control.
  11. VIDEO CHORE: Shoot the Hugel Decomposition at Two Years video DONE and Early May Garden Tour.
  12. Replant coles that did not survive these damn wind storms. DONE
  13. Make plant supplement list for Farmer’s Market plant hunt. Can I just say that thus far I am only replacing TWO tomato plants out of the 70 varieties I have planted? Very successful indoor seeding operation, if I do say so myself.
