All plants grown in the high wind prairie, Midwest, in macro-climate zone 5(ish). Average dewpoint in summer is around 60. Soil is a loamy clay. Although my preference is organic, I have used commercial fertilizers from time to time. Gardening personality relaxed and experimental, purist about very little. Growing Days approximately 135

Mid April is generally when the USDA Zone 4/5 gardener can get outside. The ground is often workable, the snow is mostly melted.

The chances of snowfall haven’t left us completely, but the weather does allow us to get our hands, knees and garden trowels a bit dirty.

The timing is great to get your soil test done, as you won’t be digging your sample from solid earth.

The stores are beginning to stock with cold hardy plants i.e. the brassicas and some herbs, rose bushes and shrubs.

Might be a great time to start strolling through your local garden center for landscaping ideas and a burst of color!
