October Harvest in Zone 4, Zone 5

All seeds grown in the high wind prairie, Midwest, in macro-climate zone 5(ish). Average dewpoint in summer is around 60. Soil is a loamy clay. Although my preference is organic, I have used commercial fertilizers from time to time. Growing days are approximately 135.

Yes, if it is still warm and hard frost hasn’t hit yet, the garden is still going in early October.  In fact, there are a few crops that take advantage of the cooler temps. Brassica and root crops.

  • Broccoli
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Carrots
  • Lettuce
  • Kohlrabi
  • Peas
  • Winter Squash

If the season extends itself by Mother Nature’s desire, a September harvest will keep putting food on the table far beyond it. In 2021, my very last harvest was Halloween. Peppers even!
