Tomato Talk – Hungarian Heart Tomato

The Hungarian Heart tomato variety is a favorite of gardeners who enjoy a solid, large red oxheart tomato.

All seeds grown in the high wind prairie, Midwest, in macro-climate zone 5(ish). Average dewpoint in summer is around 60. Soil is a loamy clay. Although my preference is organic, I have used commercial fertilizers from time to time. Growing Days approximately 135.

The flavor of the Hungarian Heart tomato is well balanced between sweet and acid, is extraordinarily meaty and works well both as a fresh slicer and a canning tomato. The seedlings emerged at the normal time, are healthy with notably thick stems. The plants produce an average amount of fruit mid-season. Disease resistance is average to good. This tomato is an heirloom, and as is common with large heirloom tomatoes, will often produce mega-blossoms.

I purchased my Hungarian Heart tomato seeds from Bakers Creek seeds, yet they are becoming more common. As of this writing, the seeds are available for purchase at Renaissance Farms Seeds too. I checked a few other vendors and I did not see the seeds. Yet!
