Series – Future Self Journal – 6C – Seed Buying

First Fruit today: Clementine

More patting myself on the back for my otherworldly foresight. As I may have mentioned many other times, my seed shopping is done and has been for weeks. I always order early, but this year there was additional urgency per my infuriating experience with a few seed companies cancelling orders when it was far too late to find the product elsewhere (looking at you High Mowing Seeds), or not being able to contact, communicate with or cancel an order, so received the seeds late in June, far too late to plant (looking at YOU Pinetree).

I received the Johnny’s Seeds catalogue last week. I normally avoid Johnny’s seeds if I can, as they are the most expensive, with high shipping costs and their seeds do not perform better than cheaper varieties. They do, however, have the most informative seed catalogue out of all the seed companies I use. Additionally, their greens selection is also the best. So I usually still order a packet or two from then every year, wincing through the checkout process and paying far too much for two packets of seeds.

This year, Johnny’s is being very honest. My pet peeve last year is that we small home gardeners are not the target customer for most seed companies, and got shut out at the last minute as seed companies gave larger orders preference. A large market grower, commercial grower, can clean out the seed supply quite easily. As a business, a large bulk order would be preferable to the small order of a home gardener, so I get it. But tell me please, and avoid pissing me off when you cancel/adjust or send seeds late, causing a big mess from me you’ll have to clean up. Johnny’s currently, today, has a banner along the top page of their webpages:

Currently Only Accepting Orders From Commercial Farmers. Home Garden Ordering Available Tues-Thurs ET

Well, that sucks, but I am glad to see what I already know to be true. I think ALL seed sellers should be as upfront. Thanks to COVID, we have so many baby home gardeners, who don’t yet know the seed supply hardships and where we fall on the priority list of most seed companies.

Grateful for:
