As of today, we are planting seventeen types of seasoning peppers, fifteen types of sweet peppers and thirteen varieties of hot peppers. All planted in a backyard suburban garden utilizing high intensity spacing.
All seeds grown in the high wind prairie, Midwest, in macro-climate zone 5(ish). Average dewpoint in summer is around 60. Soil is a loamy clay. Although my preference is organic, I have used commercial fertilizers from time to time. Growing Days approximately 135.

Growing Peppers Up North
Just a few growing notes. I have a garden calendar when I make all my notes and reminders. When to plant, when to fertilize and this time of year, how many days left until the approximate plant out date. I plant my pepper seeds inside 70 days before the approximate plant out date. Generally, the plant out day is mid-May. I am flexible and keep an eye on the ten day forecast.
I have used all different types of growing mediums to start my seeds. Coir, Jiffy peat pots, Miracle Grow, cheap potting soil, a vermiculite mix, special seed starting soil. They all start seeds just fine. All the pots are individually tagged and put into an underbed storage bin for easy transport and bottom watering.
Feel free to follow me on youtube; walk through the season with me in my gardens.
