I Left Whole Winter Squashes to Overwinter Outside

Just to see what would happen. I assumed they would turn to mush and disintegrate by spring. I had a nice squash harvest. So I took some photos. I gave many away, literally leaving them on the neighbors’ porch like a true pumpkin fairy. I ate some and still have a few in the garage. It’ll be April soon, love that I still have a lot of harvest from last year. Also clear sign I like growing squash more than I like eating it.

The butternut squash did what I expected. I see a bit of skin, yet the rest has become one with the east fence-line garden. The musquee de provence, or the Bourdain squash as I call it, is still identifiable yet has flattened into an orange mushy mess. Again, expected.

The unknown variety pumpkin that I purchased from the Farmer’s Market is a firm, hollow, feather-light ball turned large rattle. Nature’s beachball, filled with dried seeds. In the above photo, it’s the largest pumpkin in the center.

My short clip the day I checked it, five months after setting it along the fence-line. To do whatever.

Yeah, I’ll be opening this squash on camera, once I do, I’ll post another link to that video. I have got to see what it looks like inside. I did not expect to end up with a squash I can literally play knock knock on, five months after abandoning it to winter snows and spring slush.

It’s really cool!
