Garden Chores – Mid August

Wading through the August sludge of the I Don’t Wanna.

  1. Clear out dead plants. Earlier season spent blooms in particular need attention
  2. Hunt around the yard for any volunteer plants to either pot, relocate or compost.
  3. Fertilize any plants that may give you a late or second bloom. I fertilize my Bourdain squash, as it fruits late, as well fertilize beans to keep them going.
  4. Collect garlic bulbils from any missed garlic stalks. Think about where you might like to start another garlic patch.
  5. Check any new plantings of trees and shrubs. Are they getting enough water? Are they healthy? Is the placement correct? Any signs of needing fertilizer?
  6. Look for end of season sales on garden related products. Pots, fertilizer and soil products are often at deep discount right now.
  7. Prepare your dehydrator, freezer and jars for any preservation tasks.
  8. Double check to make sure any diseased plant trimmings are properly disposed of, and nowhere near your compost or mulch piles.
  9. How is the compost doing? Make sure it is not too wet or dry and that your ratios are correct.
  10. If you are a northern gardener, enjoy the waning summer. So fleeting!
