All seeds grown in the high wind prairie, Midwest, in macro-climate zone 5(ish). Average dewpoint in summer is around 60. Soil is a loamy clay. Although my preference is organic, I have used commercial fertilizers from time to time. Growing Days approximately 135.
Agi Red is a tomato bred by Fred Hempel of Artisan Seeds. It’s an F1 Hybrid tomato. It’s an excellent keeper, being delicious at least two weeks after picking at full ripeness. The fruit is both sweet and rich, one of my favorite snacking tomatoes. Have I mentioned how pretty the tomato is?
Grow Notes
The seeds germinate typical for a tomato. Agi Red tomato seeds germinate in 2-3 days in the tropical hotbox I use, or within a week by usual open air methods. The seedlings are strong. Stake at the usual time as you would with other tomatoes, after they have reached about foot tall. As with most tomatoes, it’s best to put a fan on the seedlings from time to time to strengthen the stems particularly if you will be transplanting to a prairie or other windy environment. Health of the plants is very good, I have not had issues with plant diseases in the years I have grown this tomato. Agi Reds are ready to harvest in August, if the seeds are started in March and transplanted outside in May. Adjust that timeframe according to your particular climate.
A Special Note for Agi Red. This is not a tomato to harvest before it is ripe and allow to ripen off the vine. This tomato will last week after harvest, if it is harvested at full ripeness. A ripe Agi Red is fully red inside and outside, with some orange and green streaking.
